The Main Branch of Science
Prof.Dr. Ece KONAÇ
History
Our department took its place as "molecular biology" in the medical faculty established under AITIA in 1979, and as "Department of Medical Biology and Genetics" in Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, which was established in 1982 with the law of YÖK. Undergraduate courses, the first faculty member of our department Dr. Adnan Menevşe started to be taught as "molecular biology lectures" on January 1, 1980. Dr. Sevda Menevşe started to work as a second lecturer in our department in September 1980. Dr. Sevda Menevşe together with Dr. Adnan Menevşe, they taught Medical Biology-Genetics in terms of I, and Biochemistry courses in terms of I and II at the Faculty of Medicine and they also taught Medical Biology-Genetics at the Faculty of Pharmacy for a long time. Sevda Menevşe has also undertaken the responsibility of the biochemistry routine laboratory for a while. The last of our three faculty members in the 41-year history of our department competing under difficult conditions, is Abdullah Ekmekçi, who started to work as the first assistant of our department in 1981 and appointed in 1989 (Other assistants are Gürsel Orhan and B. Ufuk Şakül). Since the year of his appointment, Abdullah Ekmekçi has given Medical Biology-Genetics courses at the Faculty of Pharmacy between 1992 and 2000 years, as well as Medical Biology-Genetics courses at the Faculty of Medicine. As for the other faculty members of our department, our young faculty member who is raised and hopeful future of our department, Dr. Ece Konaç was founded in 2005, Dr. H. İlke Önen in 2009, Dr. Atiye Seda YAR SAĞLAM in 2017, and Dr. Nuray Varol in 2020 joined our department.

Our first head of department, Dr. Adnan Menevşe (1980-1990 and 2006-2009). In the following years, between 1990-2003 and 2009-2015, Dr. Sevda Menevşe; between 2003-2006 and 2015-2018, Dr. Abdullah Ekmekçi; and since 2018, Dr. Ece Konaç has been the Head of the Department.

Our department has graduated 46 master's and 52 doctorate students during the 41-year academic period since its establishment, and has specialized five research assistants between 1991 and 2000. A professor, three associate professors and three research assistants within the scope of ÖYP are currently working in the staff of our department, and many of our graduate and doctoral students continue their academic studies.

The research laboratories of our department on the 4th floor of the basic sciences building also functioned as routine genetic laboratories where Sevda Menevşe was founded between 1991-2003 and five research assistants were specialized. However, our laboratories, which were created with labor for years and removed to Life Sciences in Gölbaşı campus with the initiative of the rector of the period, except for the preference of our department in the summer of 2012, were carried by the newly appointed dean in the fall of 2016 and took their place on the old floor of the Faculty of Medicine campus.

Our department updates and carries out its undergraduate and graduate education studies in parallel with the developments in molecular biology and genetics. Our department, which conducts scientific researches generally in the fields of genomics, transcriptomic, and proteomics within the limits of its possibilities, continues to work as "Department of Medical Biology" in Gazi University Faculty of Medicine and as "Department of Medical Biology and Genetics " in Gazi University Institute of Health Sciences.

Qualification Awarded
Doctorate Degree in Medical Biology and Genetics
Admission Requirements
General admission requirements for Turkish and foreign students apply to start the program.
Higher Grade Transition
The student completes the Doctorate program.
Graduation Requirements
Students must complete the courses they have taken within six years. Doctoral and proficiency students who successfully complete their courses are taken to the doctoral qualifying exam. For the student who is successful in the proficiency exam, a thesis monitoring committee is formed within a month with the opinion of the advisor and the recommendation of the relevant chair and the decision of the institute management board. After the final report of the thesis monitoring committee that he can attend the thesis defense, a student who prepares a project must write a text explaining and documenting his work in accordance with the principles of thesis writing and also defend his thesis or project orally before the jury.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Most of our graduate graduates work as researchers and academicians at universities. Apart from that, they can work in public institutions, research laboratories and private sector such as medical companies.
Assessment and Grading
quantification and consideration
(1) Exams are evaluated over 100 full points. The weights of midterm and final exam notes to be used in calculating the success grade are recommended to the Rector's Office by the relevant boards, taking into account the characteristics of the courses. In addition, the lecturer of the course makes an announcement at the beginning of the semester covering the content of the course, all kinds of issues that will be the basis for the calculation of the success grade, the relevant resources and the time to spare for the students outside the class hours.
(2) For students who fulfill the conditions in Article 21 and take the final exam, the score calculated as above is called the raw success score.
(3) A student whose raw success score is below 25.00 fails from that course by getting a direct (FF) grade. The success grade of the student whose raw success score is 25.00 and above; The general condition of the class is determined as one of the letter grades whose expansions and coefficients are stated below, using one of the methods prepared by the Rectorate, taking into account the arithmetic averages and statistical distribution. After this evaluation, it is possible to have letter grade equivalents (FF) of raw success scores of 25.00 and above.
(4) Grades and coefficients are evaluated as follows:

Notes Coefficients
AA 4.00
BA 3.50
BB 3.00
CB 2.50
CC 2.00
DC 1.50
DD 1.00
FD 0.50
FF 0.00

B: Successful for non-credit courses,
K: Remains for courses without credit,
D: Absent,
G: Not entered,
M: Exempt,
Q: Ongoing work,
E: Incomplete ((E) grade, which is not corrected until the course registration date of the following semester, is converted into (FF))
(5) A student who takes one of the grades (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), (CC) from a course is considered successful in that course. In addition, students whose GPA for a semester / year is at least 2.00 are considered successful from the courses they have taken that semester / year (DC) grade. This result is expressed as (DC +).
(6) (B) and (K) grades are not included in average calculation.
(7) (M) grade is given to students who are transferred from outside the University or enrolled in the University through the ÖSYM exam, horizontal and vertical transfer, for the courses they have previously taken and whose equivalence is recognized by the relevant administrative board upon the recommendation of the department chair. (M) grade is not included in the average calculation.
