About Programme

In the Department of Periodontology, there are 9 professors, 4 associate professors, 1 lecturer, 1 lecturer, 6 specialization students, 39 doctoral students. 4 nurses and 3 secretaries work in the Periodontology Department.

The Department of Periodontology consists of a sitting and working area, a clinic and an operating room for the lecturers.

There are a total of 34 dental units used by students and instructors in our clinic.

There are 11 ultrasonic scalers and 24 computers integrated into the dental units. There is a seminar room for 50 people to be used in trainings.

Topics such as periodontal regeneration, pathogenesis, microbiology, immunology and biochemistry of periodontal diseases, and implant surgery are the main research topics. From the Department of Periodontology, 106 doctoral students have received the title of Doctor of Science in Periodontology, and 8 students have received the title of "Periodontology Specialist". Periodontology, Community Oral and Dental Health and Implantology courses are given by the Department of Periodontology and the grading system of the university is used.

History
Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Periodontology, was founded by Prof. Dr. Köksal BALOŞ , according to the provisions of the Academic Organization Regulation of Law No. 2547, for the first time in October 1982, who was also the founding dean of the faculty.
Until that date, the periodontology education, which was given at the theoretical level by the relevant faculty members assigned from external faculties, thus gained the opportunity to perform clinical practice and intensive public service. After its establishment, Dr. Belgin Tüzer Bal, Dr. Emel Aytuğ Ökte, Dr. Ateş Parlar and Dr. Mehmet Yalım was assigned as first research assistants.

At the end of the past forty years, today, with 15 faculty members -including 9 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 1 Doctor Instructors, 1 lecturer Doctor- and modern clinical facilities, undergraduate and postgraduate education and intensive public service are provided.

Since its establishment, many doctoral studies have been completed and the number of national and international publications and papers is over 800.
Qualification Awarded
Upon completion of doctorate programme in the Department of Periodontology, the students have got the title of "Doctor of Science".

Higher Grade Transition
Graduates who succesfully completed doctorate degree may apply to both in the same or related disciplines in national or international higher education institutions or universities to get a position in academic staff.
Graduation Requirements
The student must be a graduate of the dentistry faculty. After completing the required credits within 3 semesters of doctoral courses, students must pass the PhD Proficiency exam in the 4th semester, and then start working on their doctoral thesis. Those who present their doctoral thesis and successfully pass the exam held by the doctoral jury are entitled to complete the program and get the title of "doctor of science".
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Dentists who successfully complete their doctorate program in the department of periodontology receive the got of "Doctor of Science". Graduates can continue their academic life in different Dentistry Faculties' Periodontology Departments, depending on current opportunities. They can work as specialist in Oral and Dental Health Centers affiliated to the Turkish Ministry of Health. As well as having the right to open their own private practice, they can also work as a specialist in private hospitals and clinics with different scale.
Assessment and Grading
In accordance with Gazi University Graduate Education and Examination Regulation - 11 June 2019:

(1) Students take the final exam and/or the final project in addition to the mid-term exams and/or mid-term studies. Examination calendar is published on the website of the related academic department.
(2) The success of the students is evaluated with the methods and criteria which are stated on the course description forms that are declared at the beginning of semester.
(3) Students are obliged to succeed in must courses. They can reselect a failed elective course or select another elective instead.
(4) Mid-term exams and/or mid-term studies and final exam and/or the final project are evaluated over 100 raw points. Letter success grades over 100 raw points are given for seminars, thesis studies, term project courses and proficiency exams. To succeed in courses, the minimum letter success grades must be CC for master?s degree and CB for doctorate and integrated (post bachelor) doctorate.
(5) A student whose raw point is under 25 fails the course by receiving an (FF) grade directly. The success grade of a student whose raw point is 25 or above is evaluated with the grades of which coefficients and definitions are stated below considering the general status of the class, average points and statistical range. After this evaluation, it is possible for the letter success grade equivalents of raw points that are 25 and above to be (FF).

b) The letter grades other than the ones in the clause ?a? are:
1) D: Absent 2) G: Not attended 3) E: Incomplete (The E grades which are not corrected until after 3 weeks from the finalization of letter success grades are converted to FF) (7) The CumGPA is calculated via dividing the final grades of all of the courses throughout a student?s study period by the total number of credits. The obtained CumGPA is shown with two decimals after the point. (8) While calculating both the GPAs of semesters/years and the CumGPA, the letters grades from AA to FF are based on. G and D grades are processed as FF. (9) All grades are included in the transcripts of students. (10) For graduation, the CumGPA must be 2,50/4,00 minimum for master?s degree with or without thesis; 3,00/4,00 minimum for doctorate or integrated (post bachelor) doctorate programmes. Despite completing all the credits, students who cannot provide the graduation conditions take new courses to do so. (11) Students who do not provide the attendance conditions or other course requirements cannot take the final exam of the course and are regarded as absent (D).
