History
Our department was established in the 1947-48 academic year. Christel CHRISTUNUS was the first to head the department.
The department was established to meet the needs of the state for teachers and local translators. According to Ebet Mahir Yalnız, one of the first graduates of the department, the reason for the establishment of the German Department is not only to complete the foreign language team; The fact that Reşat Şemsettin Sirer, then Minister of National Education, was influenced by German culture and education was also effective in this. Cemal Köprülü, who has been teaching the German classes of other departments for many years, played a role in convincing Sirer to open the department. The German Department was also established and developed following the path of the Foreign Language departments that were opened before. Again, according to Solo, the department was established with three teachers: Mr. and Mrs. Christunus from Austria and Mahir Yalnız.
The department was opened with 10 boarding students. The education period of the department was increased from 2 years to 3 years in 1961-62. The department gave its first graduates in 1950. In 1979, the education was extended to 4 years and the Gazi Education Institute was renamed Gazi Teachers School. When Gazi University was established in the 1982-83 academic year, Gazi Teacher's School was transformed into Gazi Education Faculty. Including the preparatory training in 1991, the training period was increased to 5 years.
