History
Gazi University Faculty of Medicine was founded as a part of Ankara School of Financial and Commercial Sciences on October 2, 1979. The efforts of trying to build a new Faculty of Medicine started in the first months of 1979. As a result, an agreement was established to use the Dr. Muhittin Ulker Emergency and Traumatology Hospital which belonged to The Turkish Traffic Accidents Aid Foundation but was run by The Ministry of Social Aid, in the Balgat district of Ankara. With a protocol signed by Ankara School of Financial and Commercial Sciences, The Ministry of Health and Social Aid, The Turkish Traffic Accidents Aid Foundation in March 26, 1979, the Dr. Muhittin Ulker Emergency and Traumatology Hospital becomes Ankara School of Financial and Commercial Sciences? Medical School?s Treatment and Research Hospital. After the preparations Ankara School of Financial and Commercial Sciences? Medical School was established on October 2, 1979 in accordance with law number 20695 article 3 and starts serving people in the Dr. Muhittin Ulker Emergency and Traumatology Hospital. This new faculty was Ankara?s 3rd and Turkey?s 18th Faculty of Medicine.

At the start of the academic year 1979-1980 the Faculty of Medicine had 7 Academic Members, 17 assistants and 100 students. Basic Medical Laboratories needed for the education of medicine were not present. For this purpose, barracks were built to use as classrooms, labs and student cafeteria in a field in Gazi district next to the Faculty of Pharmaceutics by expropriation. At the same time the Faculty of Medicine was still searching for a terrain available to build a modern Medical Centre with education units and a hospital. As a result, the property where it is situated today, between the Konya highway and Ciftlik intersection was found and in November 1984 the foundation of today?s modern Gazi Hospital was laid. In June 1985, Gazi University Faculty of Medicine honors its first graduates.

On June 30 1986, the new hospital building built by making necessary modifications in the dormitories was entered into service. The hospital?s name is Gazi Hospital. So the faculty serving under Dr. Muhittin Ulker Emergency and Traumatology Hospital was now separated and started to serve in its own hospital. In 1988 2 stories of prefabrication built on the hospital building solved the academic members? room problem. At the end of the year the education block was finished with modern classrooms and laboratories. In 1989 10 years has passes. Academic staff number had reached 320 and the students 1378. External credit opportunities were researched to finish the building of the hospital which continued in 2 blocks. Credit was funded by an agreement signed with the European Union Social Development Fund in December 1990. In September 1991, another agreement was made in the Turkish-French Joint Economic Commission and a credit was funded to provide medical and other equipment for the hospital. After 1992 all these developments gain immense speed. In 1994, Gazi Hospital?s polyclinic building and in 1997, inpatient wards, laboratories and medical imaging units were completed.

Quality is strongly related to having an assurance system. Thus, meetings were held with the Turkish Quality Standards Institute (TQSI) and agreements were signed with a result of starting studies of TS-EN-ISO 9001 Quality Assurance System in the start of 1997. Studies were completed in March 1998 with active participation and support of all the staff. After documentation enquiries by the TQSI Gazi Hospital was entitled to TS-EN-ISO 9001 Quality Assurance System Certification valid from May 29 1998. New Emergency Unit and additional hospital blocks were entered into service on July 10 2000. With a ceremony on March 7 2000 Faculty of Medicine Social Installations for Students was opened. Social Installations for Students situated in the Faculty of Medicine Campus is a modern installation comprises a dining area with a capacity of 284, canteen, reading area with a capacity of 174, internet center with a capacity of 30, chess saloon and a photocopy center. In addition a laboratory for education skills was opened for support to clinical applications.

As Gazi University Faculty of Medicine receiving its name from the founder of our Republic Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, we are very pleased and proud to be the first State University Hospital to be entitled to TS-EN-ISO 9001 Quality Assurance System Certification in the 75th year of our Republic. The English program was opened in 2011.
