About Programme

Gazi University Chemistry Department has a long history. In 1982, it took place as a separate department within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences within the body of Gazi University. In 2011, with the separation of the Faculties of Science and Letters within the body of Gazi University, it took its place among the departments of the Faculty of Science. Gazi University Chemistry Department has 5 departments: Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.

Within our department, there are 56 academic and 1 administrative staff, including Faculty Members of 31 Professors, 6 Associate Professors, 2 Assist Professors, 4 Lecturers (Applied Units) and 13 Research Assistants. There are 12 research laboratories in our department. In addition, our unit continues its educational activities with 6 equipped laboratories, namely Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, Organic Chemistry Laboratory, Biochemistry Laboratory, Physical Chemistry Laboratory and Instrumental Analysis Laboratory.

The Main Branch of Science
Prof.Dr. Ali DİŞLİ
History
The Chemistry Department was established in 1982. The undergraduate program offered in the Chemistry Department is a professional program that follows the latest developments in the field and is prepared to train competent students in contemporary research and development studies. Our department provides 4-year undergraduate education.
There are five major fields of study at the Chemistry Department: Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. There are five student laboratories in the Chemistry Department: Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, Instrumental Analysis Laboratory, Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, Physical Chemistry Laboratory, and Organic Chemistry Laboratory.
Since the 2012-2013 academic year, starting from the first year students, the English-Supported Turkish Education model has been implemented. In this model, English Courses equivalent to the Preparatory Class (approximately 400 hours) are distributed over four academic years. In addition, our students are graduated with a partial specialization in one of the major fields by choosing one of the modules of Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry or Organic Chemistry in the forth year.
The Chemistry Department is one of the leading departments of our country and our university with its experienced faculty members whose researches cover almost all areas of the chemistry, modern research laboratories, and strong research infrastructure with modern instruments such as NMR, ATR-FTIR, UV-Vis, HPLC, GC, elemental analysis and atomic absorption spectrometer.
Qualification Awarded
Bachelor's Degree (B.Sc.) in Chemistry
Admission Requirements
General admission requirements stated under Info on the Institution on this website are being applied to start this programme.
Higher Grade Transition
Students who are graduated from Bachelor's degree program, can apply to graduate programs (M.Sc. or Ph.D.).
Graduation Requirements
Item 38- To be able to have an associate's or bachelor's degree, students are expected to successfully complete the required courses and hold a GPA of at least 2.00. Upon graduating, Students with a GPA between 3.00 and 3.50 are included in Dean's Honor List whereas students with a GPA of 3.51 or higher are included in Dean's High Honor List and this situation is stated in their diplomas. The certificates of associate's and Bachelor's degree given by faculty are issued differently for every level. However, they are issued to be common in all institutions of Gazi University. Until the certificates are prepared, students are given a "Temporary Graduation Certificate" on condition of returning while taking the diploma. Diploma is given only for once. On losing, a photographed certificate which will replace the diploma is issued and on this certificate the reason for this issue is stated as losing the original copy as well. This document and diplomas are signed by both Dean and the Rector.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates
B.Sc. graduates assume Chemist title. Graduates can be hired in the state laboratories, hospitals, and private organizations.
Assessment and Grading
(1) For each course taken, students are given a letter success grade at the end of the semester/year.
(2) This grade is given by the instructor of the course.
(3) While evaluating the letter grade, a student?s success at classes, mid-terms/final examinations and attendance to classes are considered. The calculation of the letter grade is determined by the approval of the related academic unit and the Senate.
(4) The success grade of a student is calculated over 100 points. This grade is called raw success point.
(5) A student whose raw success point is under 25.00 is directly given an FF grade and the student fails the course. The success grade of a student whose raw success point is 25.00 and above is evaluated by using the methods determined by the board decisions of the Educational Commission of the University and the Senate; with the letter grades of which coefficients and explanations are mentioned below. After this evaluation, it is also possible that the raw success points 25.00 and above may become FF letter grades.
(6) Coefficients and letter success grades are evaluated as shown below:
a)
Coefficients Letter Success Grades
4.00 AA
3.50 BA
3.00 BB
2.50 CB
2.00 CC
1.50 DC
1.00 DD
0.50 FD
0.00 FF

b) The letter grades other than the ones in the clause (a) are:
1) D: Did not Attend the Course
2) G: Did not Attend the Exam
3) E: Incomplete (The E grades which are not corrected until after 3 weeks from the finalization of letter success grades are converted to FF)
4) VZ: Withdrawn
(7) A student whose letter success grade is (AA), (BA), (BB), (CB), (CC), (DC) or (DD) is considered as succeeded the course. However, the CumGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of the student must be at least 2.00 for graduation.
