History
The school, which was established in Konya in 1926 to train teachers for secondary schools, under the name of Secondary Teachers School, moved to Ankara in the 1927-1928 academic year to an old building in the district where the current Central Bank is located. That year, the Pedagogical Branch was opened and the name of the institution changed to Gazi Teacher Training School and Education Institute. In the meantime, after the construction of the building where the current Gazi University Rectorate is located, after Architect Kemalettin Bey returned from a pre-Europe tour, the Muallim School moved from the old building to this new building. In the meantime, the education is expanded by opening branches. In order to open a Physical Education Branch, the construction of a Physical Education Hall and sports field is started next to this building. In 1932, the construction of the hall and the field began. In 1932, the construction of the hall and field is completed. With the decision of the Board of Education and Discipline dated 5 July 1932 and numbered 105, the Physical Education Branch for boys with a three-year education period was opened in the Gazi Institute of Education in the 1932-1933 academic year. Department of Physical Education starts education with 22 students in its first year.
Mr. Kurt Dainas, a specialist physical education teacher from Germany, is brought to this department by the Ministry of National Education and is recruited into the teaching staff. Meanwhile, Turkish physical education teachers were working as physical education teachers in various parts of the country. Nizamettin Kırşan, after completing his education abroad at Istanbul Male Teacher School, Vildan Aşır Savaşır, Galatasaray High School and Zehra Alagöz, they started to work from İsmet Pasha Girls Institute physical education teacher by being transferred to Gazi Education Institute Physical Education Branch. However, since there are no female students in the branch, Zehra Alagöz is assigned to theoretical lessons. This institution, which only trained male physical education teachers until 1937, started to train female physical education teachers as of 1937. In order for female students to enter their classes, Istanbul German High School, physical education teacher Ms. Margarete Korge, is included in the faculty of the department under contract by the Ministry. Meanwhile, in the 1934-1935 academic year, Mehmet Arkan and Cemal Alpman, the first graduates of the Institute, were selected by the Ministry of National Education and sent to Germany for a three-year study at the Institute of Physical Education at Berlin University. One year later, in the 1935-1936 academic year, Hasan Örengil, Cevdet Arun and Ahmet Yaraman, who are the second graduates of Gazi Education Institute Physical Education Department, were sent to Berlin State Education Academy for three-year higher education and again to Gazi Institute of Education Department of Physical Education.
Mr. Kurt Dainas, who attended classes in the Department of Physical Education of the Gazi Education Institute, was summoned by the German Government in 1939 due to the outbreak of the Second World War and had to return to his hometown. When Nizamettin Kırşan and Vildan Aşır Savaşır were assigned to the central organization of the Ministry, Hungarian trainer Gyula Ratkai, who was working as an athletics trainer in the service of the General Directorate of Physical Education, was recruited to the department in order to reinforce the weakened teacher staff at the Institute to a certain extent. Upon Margarete Korge's return to her former position, Pakize Gökay, one of the first graduates of the Institute, and İlyas Sınal, the physical education teacher of Ankara Gazi High School, were appointed to the post. Meanwhile, physical education teachers Cevdet Arun and Hasan Örengil, who completed their education in Germany and returned to the country, were appointed as physical education teachers at the Institute as of the second semester of 1940, when they completed their military service as reserve officers. Ahmet Yaraman is assigned as a teacher at the Ankara School of Political Sciences and the State Conservatory. However, after working for a short time, he caught jaundice and died at a very early age.
Education and training at Gazi Education Institute is three years in the first years. This practice was changed in mid-1937, due to the need for a physical education teacher in Secondary Education, by reducing the education period of the branch to two years. In that year, third grade students become physical education teachers after half of the year by graduating for 2.5 years. In addition to the teachers' school graduates, female students are also accepted from high school graduates that year. The condition of being a teacher school graduate is removed. This two-year practice continues until 1941, and after 1942-1943 it is three years again. Meanwhile, an evolution course for physical education teachers is opened between 1939-1942. One of these courses, which were opened to meet the increasing need for physical education teachers in schools, was changed as a short-term three-month supplementary physical education teaching course for girls and boys who graduated from University or High School in Istanbul Çapa in 1942. 18 female and 32 male assistant physical education teachers are graduated from this course. Again, in the 1942-1943 academic year, in Istanbul Haydarpaşa High School, in order to renew the knowledge of physical education teachers, separate development courses are opened for male and female teachers during the holidays.
The physical education department, which has been continuing for three years at Gazi Education Institute, is reduced to two years again due to the need for a physical education teacher. Second and third year students graduate in the same year. This two-year practice continues until 1949-1950. Next to the Gazi Education Institute, the High Institute of Physical Education, which has a three-year education period, is opened in the built building. The aim of this Institute is to train highly qualified physical education teachers and trainers, monitors (assistant coaches) for the army and various institutions, to determine the health and technical rules of physical education and sports, to regulate the health and affairs of athletes. Hasan Ali Yücel, Tahsin Banguoğlu, Vildan Aşır Savaşır and Nizamettin Kırşan are the people who worked for the opening of this school. However, all the needs, teachers and students of this established school turn into an institution that is met by the Gazi Education Institute Physical Education Department. Education and training continues for two years at the Institute of Physical Education. At the end of 1951, this school was closed.
Gazi Education Institute Physical Education Department was renamed Gazi Teacher Training School Physical Education Department in 1980. In 1980, it became a department with a four-year education and training period, renaming Gazi Teacher Training School Physical Education Department. According to the higher education law number 2547, with the decree number 41 published in the official newspaper dated 20 July 1982, it is decided to unite our institutions providing physical education and sports education under the roof of the university. Ankara 19 Mayıs Youth and Sports Academy is combined with the Physical Education Department within Gazi Education Faculty, and Gazi University Gazi Education Faculty is transformed into Physical Education and Sports Department. This department takes the name of Gazi University Physical Education and Sports High School in 1992.
Our school was transformed into "Faculty of Sport Sciences" with the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 25.01.2016 and numbered 2016/8562, published in the Official Gazette dated 08.04.2016 and numbered 29678.
